"What GS grade is my rank?" is the wrong question with a useful answer. There is no official crosswalk, but there is a widely-used protocol equivalence and, more importantly, a real qualification path that decides the grade you can actually land. This shows both.

Rough equivalence (protocol)
E-6 → GS-6–7
Base salary about $38,791 to $56,039 (2026 base scale; locality pay adds roughly 15–35% on top).
There is no official rank-to-GS crosswalk for pay or hiring. The equivalence above is a courtesy/protocol convention, not a promise. Your real GS grade is set by the position you apply for and whether you meet OPM's qualification standard through education or specialized experience. A senior NCO with the right degree or experience can qualify well above the "protocol" grade; without the qualifying experience for a given series, you might come in lower. Treat the number as a starting point, not a ceiling or a guarantee.
OPM qualifies you for a grade by education OR specialized experience. Each rung of specialized experience is one year at the next grade down.
On the equivalence: the rank-to-GS ranges are the commonly-used protocol conventions and vary by source; they are not an OPM or DoD pay/hiring standard. Salary figures are the 2026 GS base table (before locality pay).
On qualifications: grades are governed by OPM's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Actual grade depends on the job series and the specialized experience it requires. Educational substitution generally stops above GS-11. Confirm the requirements on the specific USAJOBS announcement. Educational estimate only, not an offer.
