When should I start my transition plan?

The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) must begin no later than 365 days before you separate, and can start as early as 24 months out for retirees. The earlier you start — especially your VA claim and TAP — the better your outcome, so the plan begins at the 12+ month mark.
