Each ear gets a Roman-numeral designation (I–XI) from its puretone average and speech discrimination (Table VI). The two ears combine in Table VII to give the percentage. Better ear = right (VI), poorer ear = VI.
The method is VA's own, straight from 38 CFR §4.85 and §4.86: puretone average = the 1000/2000/3000/4000 Hz thresholds averaged; Roman numeral from Table VI (or Table VIa under the §4.86 exceptional patterns); the two ears combined in Table VII. This mirrors what your C&P examiner does.
Enter your real audiogram — the puretone thresholds in decibels and the Maryland CNC speech-discrimination score, both from your C&P exam or audiologist. If a valid speech-discrimination score can't be used (e.g., language difficulty), VA rates on Table VIa (puretone only); that's an examiner determination this tool approximates via the §4.86 rules.
