The DBQ for Rosacea
Your C&P examiner fills out DBQ 21-0960F-2 (Skin Diseases) — the form that decides your rating. You can have your own doctor complete the same DBQ and submit it as evidence.

Peer-Reviewed Medical Evidence
Real, verified studies from PubMed/NIH that support a Rosacea claim. Bring these citations to your accredited VSO or C&P exam — they help show your condition is recognized in the medical literature and, where noted, linked to other service-connected conditions.
G Ital Dermatol Venereol, 2009 · PMID 19907405
Finding: This pathophysiology review identifies ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure as a leading contributor to rosacea, alongside reactive oxygen species, vascular hyperreactivity, neuropeptides, an exaggerated innate immune response, and microbes such as the Demodex mite and H. pylori.
Why it helps: Supports a biological link between chronic sun/UV and environmental exposure and the development of rosacea, which is relevant for service members with prolonged outdoor field, deck, or deployment duty arguing direct service connection.
Dermatol Ther (Heidelb), 2021 · nexus to PTSD, depression, anxiety · PMID 34657997
Finding: Meta-analysis of 14 studies (14,134,021 rosacea patients) found pooled depression prevalence of 19.6% and anxiety prevalence of 15.6%; rosacea patients were significantly more likely than healthy controls to have depression (OR 2.21, 95% CI 1.79-2.72) and anxiety (OR 2.31, 95% CI 1.56-3.44).
Why it helps: Supports a strong association between rosacea and mental-health conditions, useful for a secondary claim linking rosacea to service-connected PTSD, depression, or anxiety (or the reverse direction of aggravation).
Clin Cosmet Investig Dermatol, 2018 · nexus to depression, anxiety · PMID 29551906
Finding: This review concludes that rosacea patients have an increased risk of developing depression and anxiety, tend to avoid social situations, and that effective treatment of rosacea symptoms brings significant improvement in psychological symptoms.
Why it helps: Supports the bidirectional psychosocial burden of rosacea and a plausible link to service-connected mental-health conditions, reinforcing a secondary nexus argument with quality-of-life impact.
- Association between rosacea and cardiovascular disease: A systematic review and meta-analysisSecondary
J Cosmet Dermatol, 2021 · nexus to cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia · PMID 33350031
Finding: Pooled meta-analysis of 11 observational studies found rosacea associated with higher odds of high systolic blood pressure (OR 1.96, 95% CI 1.35-2.84), dyslipidemia (OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.19-1.88), insulin resistance/diabetes (OR 1.18, 95% CI 0.97-1.45), and cardiovascular disease (OR 6.65, 95% CI 2.80-15.76).
Why it helps: Supports an association between rosacea and cardiometabolic conditions, relevant when rosacea co-occurs with service-connected hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia in a secondary or shared-inflammation argument.
Dermatol Ther (Heidelb), 2023 · nexus to inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis · PMID 37338720
Finding: Meta-analysis of 8 studies found a bidirectional link: rosacea prevalence was higher in IBD patients (pooled OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.52-2.26), and rosacea patients had elevated risk of IBD overall (IRR 1.37), Crohn's disease (IRR 1.60), and ulcerative colitis (IRR 1.26).
Why it helps: Supports a bidirectional association between rosacea and inflammatory bowel disease, useful for a secondary claim where one condition is already service-connected and the other is being claimed as related.
J Am Acad Dermatol, 2018 · nexus to depression, anxiety, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, dementia · PMID 29107339
Finding: Systematic review of 29 studies found statistically significant associations of rosacea with depression (n=117,848), hypertension (n=18,176), cardiovascular disease (n=9,739), anxiety disorder (n=9,079), dyslipidemia (n=7,004), diabetes (n=6,306), migraine (n=6,136), rheumatoid arthritis (n=4,192), H. pylori infection, ulcerative colitis, and dementia.
Why it helps: Provides a broad evidence base linking rosacea to multiple systemic and psychiatric conditions, useful as a foundational reference for several secondary-nexus arguments; the authors note causality cannot be established.
