"Best states for veterans" lists rank one number. Your real answer depends on your household. This compares 2-3 states on the two biggest dollar levers, how each taxes your military pension and the disabled-veteran property tax on your home, with real 2026 numbers instead of a headline.

On the two biggest levers, the winner for your household is
California
about $112/yr cheaper than Texas in state income tax on your pension plus property tax.
| State | Pension income tax | Property tax | Total / yr |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | $0 | $4,900 | $4,900 |
| CaliforniaBEST | $2,128 | $2,660 | $4,788 |
Lower total = more money stays in your pocket. "Pension income tax" uses each state's top marginal rate on the taxable portion (an upper bound). "Property tax" is home value × the statewide effective rate, with a full exemption applied where a 100% rating qualifies.
Military pension: Texas has no personal income tax (constitutionally prohibited), so military retirement pay is never taxed.
Property tax: 100% total exemption applies only to the disabled veteran's residence homestead and includes Individual Unemployability (TDIU); partial dollar exemptions (Tax Code 11.22) may apply to any property owned. No income cap.
A partial disabled-vet property break may apply at your rating that this estimate does not subtract — check the note above.
Military pension: New for 2025-2029: exclude up to $20,000 of military retirement pay if AGI is under $125k (single) / $250k (joint); otherwise fully taxed.
Property tax: Requires a 100% service-connected rating OR compensation at the 100% rate due to individual unemployability (TDIU). Principal residence. Fixed value exemption (not full): 2026 basic $180,671, low-income $271,009 (household income <= $81,131). Partial ratings do not qualify.
A partial disabled-vet property break may apply at your rating that this estimate does not subtract — check the note above.
What this computes: the two highest-dollar levers, from a primary-source-verified 2026 dataset — how each state taxes your military retirement pay, and the disabled-veteran property tax on your home. Income-tax figures use the state's top marginal rate on the taxable portion (an upper bound; your effective rate is usually lower). Property tax uses the statewide effective rate; your county's rate will differ.
What it does NOT compute: sales tax, vehicle fees, Social Security tax, tuition benefits (Hazlewood, CA Fee Waiver), VA health-care proximity, and job market. Those matter too — compare them in our state benefits tool. Partial and income-tested property exemptions below a full 100% exemption are shown as notes, not subtracted, so nothing is invented.
Don't move for the headline, move for the total. A no-income-tax state can still cost more through property and sales tax. Estimate only, not tax advice — confirm with each state's Department of Revenue and your county assessor before deciding.
