BAH is a tax-free monthly housing allowance based on your duty-station ZIP code, your pay grade, and whether you have dependents. Rates are set once a year by the DoD and reflect local rental costs, so the same rank earns very different BAH in San Diego vs. San Antonio. It does not depend on your actual rent — if your housing costs less than your BAH, you keep the difference.
These are the official rates effective January 1, 2026, covering all 338 Military Housing Areas across the 50 states, DC, and U.S. territories. Rates change every January 1.
