The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays a Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA)while you're in school. For in-person or hybrid students, it's based on the military Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 with dependents at the ZIP code of the campus where you attend most of your classes. That amount is then scaled by two things: your benefit percentage (100% down to 50%, set by your active-duty time) and your rate of pursuit (how heavy your course load is). Train at half-time or less and you get no housing allowance at all.
Take every class online and the rules change: instead of a local rate, you get a flat national online rate — up to $1,261/month at 100% for 2026–2027. On top of housing, you also get a books and supplies stipend and tuition coverage (full in-state at public schools, or up to $30,908.34/year at private and foreign schools, with Yellow Ribbon on top).
