Post-9/11 GI Bill Rates 2026-2027: What It Actually Covers
Private school is capped at $30,908.34 a year. What the GI Bill pays for tuition, housing and books in 2026-2027, and where the cap bites.
Bottom Line Up Front
The VA's Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) rates for the 2026โ2027 academic year (Aug 1, 2026 โ July 31, 2027) are set. At the 100% benefit level:
- Tuition & fees: a public in-state school is covered in full; a private or foreign school is capped at $30,908.34 per year.
- Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA): based on the E-5-with-dependents BAH rate for your school's ZIP code (in-person), or half the national average โ up to $1,261/month โ for online-only study.
- Books & supplies: up to $41.67 per credit (max 24 credits/year), $1,000 per academic year.
Your actual amounts scale with your benefit percentage (based on how long you served) and your rate of pursuit (full- vs part-time). Everything below is verified against VA.gov.
Tuition & Fees
What the GI Bill pays for tuition depends entirely on the type of school:
- Public school, in-state: the VA pays your full in-state tuition and mandatory fees. There's no dollar cap โ the "cap" only applies to private/foreign schools. (Out-of-state students may owe the difference unless a state or school covers it, or you qualify for in-state rates under the Choice Act.)
- Private or foreign school: the VA pays net tuition and mandatory fees up to $30,908.34 for the 2026โ2027 year at the 100% level. Anything above that is on you โ unless the school participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which can cover part or all of the overage.
If your private-school tuition runs above the cap, Yellow Ribbon is the single biggest lever, so confirm whether your school (and your program) participates before you enroll.
Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA)
The MHA is usually the biggest dollar figure, and it's the one most people get wrong:
- In-person classes: your MHA is the monthly BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents at your school's ZIP code, using the 2026 BAH tables โ not your own rank's BAH. Because it's ZIP-based, the same degree pays very differently in San Diego vs. rural Ohio. Look up the E-5-with-dependents figure for your school with the BAH calculator.
- Online-only classes: you get half the national average MHA โ up to $1,261/month for anyone who started using benefits on or after Jan 1, 2018.
- Mix of in-person and online: if at least one class meets in person, you're generally paid the in-person (ZIP-based) rate.
Your MHA also scales with your rate of pursuit โ go half-time and your housing money is roughly halved. Run your specific school and enrollment through the GI Bill MHA Calculator to see your real monthly number.

Books & Supplies Stipend
Straightforward and unchanged for 2026โ2027: $41.67 per credit hour, for up to 24 credits per year, capped at $1,000 per academic year at the 100% level. It's paid at the start of each term, proportional to your credits.
Non-Degree, Flight, and Correspondence Programs
The rates above are for standard college-degree programs. Non-college-degree (vocational), flight, and correspondence training are covered differently โ each has its own separate annual cap and payment rules, and those caps also update for the 2026โ2027 year. If you're pursuing one of those, check the exact current figure on the VA's Post-9/11 rates page rather than assuming the private-school cap applies.
How Much of This Do You Actually Get? (Benefit Tiers)
Every rate above is the 100% figure. Your actual percentage depends on your total qualifying active-duty service after Sept 10, 2001:
| Aggregate service | Benefit level |
|---|---|
| 36+ months (or a Purple Heart, or 30+ continuous days then discharged for a service-connected disability) | 100% |
| 30โ35 months | 90% |
| 24โ29 months | 80% |
| 18โ23 months | 70% |
| 6โ17 months | 60% |
| 90 days โ 5 months | 50% (40% for some pre-2013 periods) |
At 80%, for example, you'd get 80% of the tuition cap, 80% of the MHA, and 80% of the books stipend.
Put Your Numbers In
The rates are only useful once they're your rates. Two free tools do the math:
- GI Bill MHA Calculator โ your monthly housing allowance for a specific school and enrollment level.
- GI Bill vs. VR&E comparison โ if you're service-connected disabled, VR&E (Chapter 31) can sometimes beat the GI Bill (it can pay a subsistence allowance based on the E-5-with-dependents MHA and doesn't charge your GI Bill entitlement).
