AFFF from firefighting training since the 1970s leached into groundwater, Van Etten Lake, and Clark's Marsh. DoD records (2021) showed PFAS in groundwater up to 213,000 ppt; 89 of 228 Iosco County well samples exceeded Michigan criteria. One of the most-studied military PFAS sites in the country.
