After atmospheric testing ended, the U.S. shifted to underground detonations at the Nevada Test Site. VA recognizes service members who participated in underground nuclear weapons testing there for at least 250 days between January 1, 1963 and December 31, 1992 as having engaged in a radiation-risk activity.
