This is a protected passage, and the rules are built to support you. MST claims do not require a police report or an official incident report. The VA looks for markers that something happened and affected you.
MST claims use markers instead: a sudden transfer request, a drop in performance evaluations, a mental-health visit, increased substance use, relationship changes. These count as evidence.
A statement of what happened and how it has affected your work and relationships is the core. You do not have to give graphic detail, focus on the impact.
You can ask for a C&P examiner of a specific gender and bring a support person. A VSO experienced with MST can guide the whole claim.
Every veteran feels adrift in this process at some point. A free accredited VSO is your harbor pilot: they have sailed these waters a thousand times and will chart the whole course with you, at no cost. Never pay a fee or a percentage of your back pay for claim help.
This is general education, not legal advice or a promise of any outcome. Report your symptoms and history accurately and completely, and never exaggerate. A free accredited VSO can file any of these for you at no cost.
