A Veterans Service Officer (VSO) is an accredited rep who helps you file and manage your VA claim — for free. You never pay a VSO, and you should never pay anyone a percentage of your back pay to file a claim.
Avoid claim sharks. Filing a VA claim is free. Some for-profit companies charge $5,000+ or take a slice of your retroactive pay for something a free VSO does at no cost — and charging fees to prepare an initial claim is generally not permitted for accredited reps. Are VA claim companies worth it? Start with the free options below.

Every state has its own VA department with free county/state service officers — often the fastest in-person help. Search “[your state] Department of Veterans Affairs”, or start from your state benefits page.
