If you have a service-connected disability with an employment barrier, VR&E (Chapter 31) is usually best because it pays full tuition plus a living stipend and does not use your GI Bill. Without a qualifying disability, VET TEC 2.0 is built for short tech bootcamps and works even if you have no GI Bill left, while the Post-9/11 GI Bill is more flexible but spends your 36 months.

Does VET TEC 2.0 use my GI Bill entitlement?

Yes, if you have entitlement remaining. VET TEC 2.0 charges 1 month of Post-9/11, Montgomery, or DEA entitlement per month of full-time training, though those months do not count against your 48-month lifetime cap. You can also use VET TEC with zero entitlement left.

Can I use VR&E for a tech career change?

Yes. If you are service-connected with an employment barrier (generally a 20%+ rating with an employment handicap, or 10% with a serious one), VR&E can fund a coding bootcamp or other tech training under Track 4, with your counselor’s approval, and it does not charge your GI Bill.

Heads up: if you do have GI Bill entitlement, VET TEC charges it 1-for-1. But a short bootcamp uses far fewer months than a degree, so without a disability it is the least costly way to do this.
