Rating Criteria for Hyperthyroidism / Graves' Disease
Rating schedule under 38 CFR 4.119, Diagnostic Code 7900 (Hyperthyroidism, including Graves' disease), 2021 revision. Single 30% tier for six months after initial diagnosis, then rate residuals and complications separately.. Criteria are simplified summaries; your specific rating depends on severity documented in your C&P exam.
For six months after initial diagnosis of hyperthyroidism (including Graves' disease). After the six-month period, rate residuals of the disease or complications of medical treatment under the appropriate diagnostic code(s) within the appropriate body system. Note (1): if hyperthyroid cardiovascular or cardiac disease is present, evaluate separately under DC 7008. Note (2): separately evaluate eye involvement occurring as a manifestation of Graves' disease (for example diplopia under DC 6090; impairment of central visual acuity under DCs 6061-6066) under the most appropriate eye diagnostic codes.
Verified against 38 CFR Part 4, the official VA rating schedule. Reviewed July 2026.
