Add your service-connected conditions and this VA disability calculator applies the official “VA math” combined rating formula (including the bilateral factor) to show your total disability rating and estimated 2026 monthly compensation.
Once this VA disability calculator gives your combined rating, it estimates your monthly payment from the 2026 VA compensation rates (effective December 1, 2025). For a veteran with no dependents:
Dependents (spouse, children, parents) raise these amounts. See the full 2026 VA disability pay chart for every rating and dependent combination. Rates: va.gov/disability/compensation-rates.
The VA doesn't simply add your disability percentages together. Instead, each condition is applied to the remaining “healthy” percentage of your body. For example, a 50% rating and a 30% rating don't equal 80% — they combine to 65%.
Example: 50% + 30%
Step 1: Start at 100% healthy
Step 2: Apply 50% → 50% remaining
Step 3: Apply 30% of 50% → 15%
Step 4: Total = 50% + 15% = 65% → rounds to 70%
Typical starting ratings shown. Individual ratings vary based on severity and evidence.

VA uses a "whole person" formula instead of simple addition. Each rating applies to the remaining "healthy" percentage after prior ratings. Example: 50% + 30% combines to 65% (rounds to 70%), not 80%. The formula is 100 - ((100 - rating1) × (100 - rating2) ÷ 100), continued for each rating.
When you have ratings on both sides of paired body parts (both knees, both shoulders, both arms), VA adds a 10% bonus to the combined value of those bilateral ratings before combining with other conditions. It exists because bilateral conditions impose more functional impairment than single-sided ones.
After applying the combined rating formula and the bilateral factor, the result rounds to the nearest 10% per 38 CFR §4.25. Example: 65% rounds up to 70%, but 64% rounds down to 60%.
Yes. The calculator uses the 2026 VA disability compensation rates effective December 1, 2025 (2.8% COLA increase). For a veteran alone with no dependents: 100% = $3,938.58, 70% = $1,808.45, 50% = $1,132.90, 10% = $180.42. Source: va.gov/disability/compensation-rates/.
No. This calculator provides estimates for educational purposes. Your actual VA rating depends on medical evidence, C&P exams, and VA adjudicators applying 38 CFR Part 4. Use this to estimate while planning your claim, then file via va.gov for the official decision.
